  • The Hurricane

On September 11, 1992, Hurricane Iniki, a category 5 hurricane, made a direct hit on the garden island of Kauai. Located in the lush hills of Kalaheo, behind what is today's Brick Oven Pizza, was a business called Tropical Shirts--a small "mom and pop" silk-screening operation. After Hurricane Iniki hit, the (then) owners assessed the damages. Among the spoils, they found messy cases of blank white t-shirts, partially stained with Kauai's famous red dirt.

  • Iron Oxide

Iron Oxide is what gives Kauai red dirt it's special color. Iron Oxide is basically rusted volcano rock over millions of years.

  • Removing your Slippahs

It is a custom in Hawaii to remove your slippers before entering their home. The custom stems from Kauai's legendary red dirt.

  • 1Bucket of Dirt can dye over 500 shirts

The dirt found on Kauai has powerfull staining capabilities. One 5 gallon bucket of dirt can easily dye over 500 shirts. Not all red dirt is the same. Some parts of the island the dirt is a lot darker. This is especially true for Kauai's West Side including Waimea and Kekeaha

  • Good Luck

The dirt used to dye our shirts has been blessed according to Hawaii tradition by a Hawaiian Priest.  This blessing is supposed to bring good luck to the wearer of the real dirt shirt
